The People’s Struggle
Documenting the people’s movement in Columbus, Ohio
On May 28, 2020, in response to the televised murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police Department, Columbus community leaders and members gathered on the city's east side to express their outrage at police violence towards people of color. The crowd included representatives from long established community advocacy groups including People’s Justice Project, Feminist Flagcorps, Women Have Options Ohio, BQIC, Columbus Freedom Coalition, and Remember Us Urban Scouts, to name a few.
Gathering on the near east side of the capitol city, hundreds of protestors reflecting the full spectrum of ages, races, identities, orientations, and faiths peacefully expressed their outrage at the violence of American police, disproportionately aimed at communities of color. Strategically taking control of the busy intersection, the protestors were met by cheers and empowered fists in the air as they waited patiently in the growing traffic.
As the sun began to set, the freedom fighters marched down the east bound lane of a main street eventually turning onto a smaller side street. As the group turned, they were quickly ascended upon by over dozen bike officers and cruisers. Legal Observers took notes as the police formed a barricade across the residential street, which quickly fills with residents coming out to watch the demonstration unfold.
Despite the sudden presence of the police, the group was able to take to the streets without arrest or incident.
